Pastor Ted Haggard[edit | edit source]

Probably the most famous name on this list, mega-church pastor Ted Haggard, who after preaching against gay marriage for many years, admitted having sexual relations with two men and taking methamphetamine in 2006[1].

Nowadays, he describes himself as a "heterosexual with complications".

George Rekers[edit | edit source]

The oddest and perhaps the most amusing case is that of George Rekers, author of "Growing Up Straight: What Families Should Know About Homosexuality" and a founder of a powerful anti-gay lobby group. Rekers hired a young, blond and muscular man, by the name of Lucien, to "help him lift his luggage" on a lecture tour[2]. He found Lucien's contact details via the website Rentboy.com, incidentally, which would be few people's first port of call for baggage carrier services.

Reverend Grant Storms[edit | edit source]

Rev. Grant Storms, a renowned anti-gay Christian pastor from Louisiana, was arrested in February 2011 for masturbating at a public park, in the vicinity of a carousel and playground where children were present[4],[5].

According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, one woman saw Storms parked in his van "looking at the playground area that contained children playing, with his zipper down...," the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office report read. After judging that Storms was masturbating, the woman and another mother who witnessed the event both alerted deputies.

Senator Roberto Arango[edit | edit source]

Senator Roberto Arango of the Puerto Rican Republican Party resigned after apparently posting remarkably explicit photos of himself on the gay cruising website Grindr[6]. Mr Arango, who recently voted for a move to block any legalisation of gay marriage in Puerto Rico, said that he could not remember taking the photos, but that they may have been to demonstrate his recent weight loss, presumably in particular around and between his buttocks.

Representative Phillip Hinkle[edit | edit source]

Phillip Hinkle (born 25 December 1946) is a former Republican member of the Indiana House of Representatives from Indianapolis, Indiana representing the 92nd District from 2000 to 2012.

In 2011 he was identified as the man who paid an 18-year-old man he found on craigslist for "a really good time" in a hotel room. The man stated that when they were in the hotel room, Hinkle "grabbed him in the rear, dropped his towel and sat down on the bed, naked"[7],[8]. The young man changed his mind about the sexual encounter, prompting Hinkle to offer him money and electronics as a bribe to keep quiet[9].

Reverend Albert Odulele[edit | edit source]

Glenn Murphy Jr.[edit | edit source]

Glenn Murphy Jr., the chairman of the Clark County Republican Party in Indiana, spent time in jail after pleading guilty to "performing unwanted oral sex on a man"[10]. Mr Murphy had previously supported and promoted candidates with anti-gay positions.

Caleb Hesse[edit | edit source]

Caleb Douglas Hesse, a longtime anti-gay activist, California Prop 8 donor, and elementary school teacher, was taken into custody on 17 August 2012 after admitting inappropriate contact with young boys. He had been a teacher for the Morongo Unified School District since 1987. Most recently, he was teaching first grade at Friendly Hills Elementary School in Joshua Tree. He was also a longtime youth volunteer with the virulently homophobic Evangelical Free Church of Yucca Valley.

Hesse confessed to sexually abusing “numerous underage boys,” with authorities believing the crimes occurred between the early 1980’s and as recently as a week ago”[11]. Investigators say Hesse met the majority of the victims during overnight outings with a youth group at the Evangelical Free Church.

Troy King[edit | edit source]

Alabama Attorney General Troy King is currently married to Paige King with whom he has three children. He is a Baptist.

Numerous references have been published accusing King of an extra-marital affair with a young male aide which has hurt his political aspirations. He was allegedly caught in bed with a young male assistant by his wife, leading to his banishment from their Montgomery home[12]. He has, however, denied that the affair took place.

Gaylard Williams[edit | edit source]

Pastor Gaylard Williams of anti-gay Praise Cathedral Church of God in Indiana was arrested for sexually harassing a man at a lake[13].

The victim said Williams approached him while he sat in his car, squeezed his genitals and asked him for oral sex. He said he only managed to make Williams leave by pretending to reach for a gun.

When police caught up with Williams they found gay pornography in his car. Williams claimed he was holding the pornography for a friend, and was at the lake to look for a friend who fished there. Church of God beliefs state that homosexuality is a sin, marriage is between a man and a woman, and “We will engage in those activities which glorify God in our body and which avoid the fulfillment of the lust of the flesh.”
